Cellar
A birthday party venue in Vienna: our culture cellar, piano included
28 September 2026
80 seats, a piano, a proper stage and no public listings: how to throw a grown-up birthday party in our culture cellar in Vienna's 2nd district.
So the birthday is coming up, you live in Vienna (or have simply stayed long enough to call it home), and the flat is not going to fit everyone. You need a birthday party venue in Vienna. Ideally one that does not feel like a conference room with balloons.
Here is ours. Beneath Kulturcafé Tachles on Karmeliterplatz sits a cellar. 80 seats. A piano that is already down there. And a stage that normally belongs to readings, concerts and cabaret.
A quick word on the name, since you will be saying it in the invitation. "Tachles" is Yiddish (the "ch" as in a Scottish "loch") and it means talking straight, getting to the point. Which is roughly how this text works.
Why a cellar, of all places?
Because this is not a function room that happens to be for hire. It is our stage. Readings, concerts and cabaret happen here, plus Floorspot, our open stage. If you are curious how that works, there is a separate piece on the cellar stage and open stage.
Marcin, one of our founders, wanted a place with a hall for concerts and events since he was young. He has had it since 2010. On your night, that hall is yours.
That is the difference from a banqueting suite: you celebrate where people usually read, sing and land punchlines. The stage is already there. So are the stories.
The piano is not decoration
It is in the cellar and it is staying there. You do not have to hire one, find one or carry one anywhere.
What you do with it is up to you. Someone in your crowd who plays and never gets an audience. A musician you invite yourself. Or simply everyone singing „Happy Birthday" live rather than off a phone. Singing in tune is optional; we are not the jury.
Private means private
You will not find a public events calendar at the Tachles. Most evenings in the cellar are private, and that is rather the point. Your party does not end up in any listing. The people who come know about it because you told them. What gets said, sung or confessed downstairs stays with the people who were there.
What it costs, without the numbers
The conditions, as they are. We deliberately do not put figures in a blog post, because figures change and blog posts do not.
- Monday to Wednesday the cellar is free of charge if the project fits. Whether your birthday qualifies is Marcin's call, made per enquiry. We cannot promise it here.
- Friday and Saturday it works against a minimum spend. Marcin will tell you what applies to your date.
- Outside opening hours too. The cellar can be hired when the café upstairs is closed. Current opening hours are at the bottom of every page.
For any other day, just ask. The general rules for hiring are in our piece on hiring the cellar.
Food and drink from the same building
The kitchen and the bar are in the same building as the cellar. The house speciality is pierogi, filled dumplings from the Polish kitchen. Gault&Millau 2026 called them „probably the best in Vienna". There are seven kinds, vegan ones among them. More in our pierogi guide.
At the bar, Robert mixes his own cocktails, and there are homemade lemonades for anyone with an early start the next day.
What is possible on your evening, and how, you sort out with Marcin. He is a chef by trade and runs the kitchen, bar and service. So you will not find a party menu or buffet promised here that we cannot guarantee. One email and you will know exactly.

Quick answers
How many people fit? 80 seats.
Is there really a piano? Yes. It is in the cellar; you bring nothing.
Is the cellar free for a birthday? Monday to Wednesday if the project fits, decided by Marcin per enquiry. Friday and Saturday against a minimum spend.
Can we celebrate outside opening hours? Yes. You agree the exact times with Marcin.
Can children come? Can I get in with a pram? You can get into the Tachles with a pram. Mention who is coming in your enquiry and Marcin will work out with you how the evening in the cellar can run best.
Right, then
If you want a birthday somewhere with a bit of character, where music actually gets played, drop Marcin a line. Date, times, number of guests, what you are planning. That is all he needs to start.
