Hiring an event space in Vienna: the cellar at the Tachles

17 September 2026

80 seats, piano included: how to hire our culture cellar in Leopoldstadt — Monday to Wednesday even free of charge if the project fits.

80 seats and a piano that is already down there

You are looking for an event space in Vienna. For a birthday, a concert, a reading, a presentation, a rehearsal. And you want to know whether it fits and what it costs — before writing three emails back and forth.

So, tachles: beneath our culture café on Karmeliterplatz lies the cellar. 80 seats. A piano is already in it. So you do not have to hire one, organise one or carry one down a Viennese cellar staircase.

The rest of this text answers, in order, what you would otherwise ask by email. Where we do not know something for certain, we write that too instead of talking it up. „Tachles" comes from Yiddish and means: get to the point. It would be odd if we forgot that of all places in a rental agreement.

What takes place down here

The cellar is not an empty hall that we happen to rent out as well. It was built as a stage — the wish for a place with a hall for concerts and events was the reason for this house from the very beginning.

What runs here:

  • Open stage „Floorspot"
  • Concerts
  • Readings
  • Cabaret
  • Evenings for songwriters, young artists, musicians and poets

On top of that come partnerships: with the Polish Institute Vienna (since July 2026), with the Austrian Chopin Society (our boss is a member himself), with Global Family and with Pint of Science.

You will not, incidentally, find a public events calendar here. What takes place down here largely stays among the people who were there. If you hire the cellar for your party, your name appears nowhere on the internet.

What it costs — and when it costs nothing

Now the part you are actually here for.

Monday to Wednesday the cellar is free of charge if the project fits.

No hall price, no hourly rate. The condition is not a number but a question: does what you have in mind suit this house? A concert, a reading, an evening for people who want to show something — that is exactly what the room is there for. Marcin decides, per enquiry, not by form.

Friday and Saturday it works against a minimum spend. Those are our strongest evenings upstairs, which is why on those days the cellar hangs on turnover rather than on rent.

For all other days and special cases there is deliberately no figure here. Ask Marcin — he will tell you what applies to your date.

Outside opening hours too

The culture café upstairs has its own opening hours — they are at the bottom of every page. They are not, however, a limit for your event. The cellar can be hired outside opening hours as well. If your presentation has to be in the afternoon, or your rehearsal falls at a time when nobody is at the counter upstairs yet: just say so. The exact times — from when to when — you agree with Marcin.

How your guests find their way here

Karmeliterplatz 1, 1020 Vienna. Leopoldstadt, right in the Karmeliter quarter.

  • U1 Nestroyplatz
  • U2 Taborstraße
  • Tram 2
  • Bus 5A

This is one of the few points you need not worry about with a Viennese venue: the cellar is easy to reach by public transport. And anyone who wants something to eat or drink before or after does not have to cross the street for it; kitchen and bar are in the same building.

How to enquire

All cellar enquiries go to Marcin Gorski. He is a founder and runs the kitchen, the bar and the service — and the cellar too. No ticketing system, no back office, no hold music.

So that your first email is already enough, please include straight away:

  1. Date — and if possible an alternative date
  2. Times, from when to when you need the room
  3. How many people you are, roughly
  4. What it is — birthday, concert, reading, presentation, rehearsal
  5. What you need for it to work

The last point is the most important. The more precisely you write what is supposed to happen on the stage, the sooner you get a clear answer instead of a follow-up question.

This is how to reach us:

Short questions, short answers

How many people fit in? 80 seats.

Is there a piano? Yes. It is in the cellar, you need bring nothing.

What does the hire cost? Monday to Wednesday free of charge if the project fits. Friday and Saturday against a minimum spend. Everything else you settle with Marcin.

Is it possible during the day or after closing time? Yes, the cellar can be hired outside opening hours too. You agree the times with Marcin.

What technical equipment is there? The piano is firmly promised. About anything further — microphone, lighting, projector — we write nothing here that we cannot guarantee you. Ask Marcin and you will know exactly.

Can I bring my own catering? Will my guests get something to eat? We decide that per event, not by house rule. Kitchen and bar are upstairs — what works for your evening you discuss directly with Marcin.

Is my date free? It is stated nowhere publicly, because most events are private. One email with your preferred date and you will know.

And now?

Whether you want to celebrate a birthday or play a concert: if you are looking for a room for 80 people, need a piano and your evening can take place on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, the most honest summary of this text is: the hall may well cost you nothing.

You find that out with one email. Date, time, number of people, what you have in mind — Marcin needs no more than that to begin with.
